Postmortem

Due to an issue with volume attachments sometimes failing on older nodes, GitLab could not fully restart after being scaled down to be backed up before attempting any update. We then worked to resolve the volume attachment issue so that GitLab could start again instead of proceeding with the update.

To ensure this issue is resolved and we can attempt updating GitLab again, the maintenance window scheduled for today will be used to rotate the affected nodes instead of updating GitLab. The first GitLab update will be attempted in tomorrow’s maintenance window (29.11.2023, 17:00 CET) instead.

We will be updating GitLab from 14.10.5 → 15.0.5. During this time, GitLab will be unavailable, new sessions will be unable to be launched, and existing sessions will not be able to push commits to GitLab. The Renkulab web pages will be unavailable and will display a maintenance notice.
